Catherine (Kay) Van Dooze
Kay Van Doozer was 36 years old when she applied to fly for the
British Air Transport Auxiliary. She held a Commercial license with
an instructor's rating and had logged more than 500 hours of flight
time. She was an extremely active Ninety-Nine and participated in many
air races, both before and after the war. She traveled to England in
the fourth group of American women arriving in England in June of 1942.
She left her service in the ATA in March of 1944 to return to the United
States and become a flight instructor with the WASP.
After being deactivated after the war Van Doozer continued to be active
in the Ninety-Nines and the National Aeronautics Association. She was
killed in a fire and explosion at her home in California in November
of 1949.
